18 Moments from 2018

Throughout 2018, the not-for-profit Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) saw increased resident and visitor utilization of its properties.

From the Ogden Point Cruise Terminal and Fisherman’s Wharf to the Inner Harbour lower causeway, Steamship Terminal, and Ship Point, the community-focused facilities serve both visitors and locals alike. 2018 was a milestone and record-setting year for many of the organization’s properties.

GVHA’s 18 moments from 2018:

  1. Four million litres of fuel dispensed at the fuel dock at Fisherman’s Wharf
  2. An estimated 400,000 people used the barrier-free breakwater walkway at Ogden Point
  3. 250 cruise ship calls brought 640,000 visitors and 230,000 crew members to Victoria
  4. 2.8 million pounds of seafood, including just shy of one million pounds of tuna, was offloaded by commercial fishing vessels at Fisherman’s Wharf
  5. The inaugural call of the flagship Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Norwegian Bliss on June 1, 2018 was the largest cruise ship to call to Ogden Point
  6. GVHA supported initiatives such as the Indigenous Cultural Festival and Songhees Cultural Centre at the Steamship Terminal as part of our commitment to work in partnership with the Esquimalt Nation and the Songhees Nation as they pursue their cultural and economic aspirations in the harbour
  7. CFB Esquimalt’s Defence on the Dock welcomed more than 5,000 people to Ogden Point
  8. A total of 55 community events were held on GVHA properties, including the 75th Swiftsure International Yacht Race
  9. The joint GVHA and City of Victoria Ship Point repair project began, which will see the 70-year old portion of the pier replaced by spring 2019
  10. The GVHA sponsorship committee supported more than 30 public events held throughout the Inner Harbour, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Ogden Point – such as Symphony Splash – with financial or in-kind support valued at more than $100,000
  11. An expanded World Oceans Day was held at Fisherman’s Wharf, raising awareness of the critical importance of the planet’s oceans
  12. Infrastructure Canada announced $1.9 million toward the $6.8 million project to extend the mooring dolphin at Ogden Point Pier B
  13. More than 800 spectators were on hand for the annual Marina Light-Up event
  14. The annual Clean Up the Shores event held in partnership with Victoria PD had more than 50 volunteers collect 1,000 pounds of waste in two hours
  15. The Victoria Cool Aid Society’s Homecoming 50th Anniversary Gala held at Ship Point raised more than $140,000
  16. All GVHA marinas were certified with a Clean Marine BC five-anchor rating, the highest possible certification
  17. The Breakwater Barge welcomed a total of 8,000 locals between May and September
  18. Improved Wi-Fi was installed at both Ogden Point and the Inner Harbour marinas, allowing visitors to stay connected during their visit to Victoria
