Broughton Pier repair updates

August 19, 2022, Victoria, BC, Canada – Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) is moving forward with needed repairs to the Broughton Street Pier facility and walkway beginning in late October 2022. The scope of work includes replacing some original wood piles, mechanical and electrical repairs, as well as repairs to other structural components. The anticipated completion date is the end of March 2023. 

Project updates

  • August 18, 2023: A window of opportunity has opened up for repair work to bracing on the walkway connecting Broughton Pier to Wharf Marina. This will being August 21, 2023 and last for approximately five days. The walkway will remain open for the duration of the repairs.
  • The remaining repair work is scheduled to begin October 2023, with completion anticipated for March 2024.

Temporary disruptions

Temporary service disruptions to power or water may be required. We understand this inconvenience and will be proactive in limiting disruptions to these services. Advance notice will be provided to affected live-aboards and businesses.

Commercial clients who operate seasonally will not be affected. Check back on this page for regular updates.

Periodic pedestrian and waterway closures and detours

Every effort shall be made to provide safe access through the project site for pedestrians and vessels. However, there will be periodic closures or adjustments to pedestrian and waterway access on the pier and connecting walkway to facilitate construction work. Please heed all temporary and permanent traffic and project signage.

Environmental and aeronautical considerations

An Environmental Management and Protection Plan for the proposed construction activities to monitor impacts of works in and around the pier is being prepared. GVHA has retained Environmental Professionals to prepare applications for necessary approvals with the Federal authorities and will work in the designated habitat protection windows for marine life, migratory birds and seabed protection.

Additionally, GVHA is required to obtain navigational and aeronautical clearance for crane and barge movement and activities during this project. Notifications for aeronautical and navigational warnings and protection will be issued by the Harbour Master as required.
